Weathersby and I sat in the corner bar at a steak and chop house and ordered beers. Why the owl didn’t order what he wanted probably had more to do with his training than politeness. Most might not have noticed, but the bird wasn’t a drinker.

“Any progress?” he asked.

“Some.”

“Are you going to tell me what I want to know?”

“The weeks not up.”

The owl sipped at his beer. “Perhaps I’ll break our agreement.”

I gave him a smile and drank my own beer. “So, you found something.”

“Yes. But I also found something out about you as well.” The glare on his glasses kept me from seeing the look in his eyes.

“Shoot.”

“Eddie had quite a job during the war, quite a job for someone so young.”

“Age doesn’t mean anything during a war.”

Weathersby nodded. “So True.”

When the owl didn’t say anything, I asked, “Are you going to tell me or what?”

“Eddie was in charge of the Seventeen Group.” When I didn’t give him a reaction one or two of his feathers stuck out of alignment.

“Eddie was on the eastern front,” I said. “I spent all my time out in the Pacific.”

That seemed to appease the bird. “Then you probably never heard of Bumblebee Three.”

“I know it’s a bug that makes honey, but otherwise no.”

“It had to do with a German system of espionage.” Weathersby looked at me closely. “Your female… Velvet was her name? She never mentioned it?”

“No. I never asked her what she did during the war.”

“Eddie knew her. She was the one he would meet up with for dinners.”

Weathersby stopped talking when the glass in my hand busted, and what little beer it contained spread across the table. The boar doing the bar tending came over and handed me a towel to stanch the blood from the cut on my hand while he cleaned up the mess and brought me another beer.

“Keep going,” I said.

A slight smile appeared on Weathersby’s face and he continued. “Eddie was working on that project just before the war ended, and he saw her in Paris. Though he didn’t know the Ram’s name at the time, Eddie was looking for a Carl Stein.”

“And?”

“Carl Stein headed an espionage ring started in the 1920s. The idea was that agents were to be sent to every country around the globe and readied themselves and their children to help Germany in wartime.”

“Agents raising agents.”

“Yes, only it’s a little more complicated than that. The group was supposed to poke, prod, and undermine so that certain powers could sweep in and take over on a global scale.”

“That sounds like crazy talk.”

Weathersby shrugged. “But how many countries were involved in 1918 and again in 1945? The idea, while complicated, isn’t so farfetched. Other than America, England, Germany, Russia, and Japan were the major powers during the second World War. How many remain, Mr. Wrench?”

“Us and Russia. But what does that have to do with Velvet?”

The owl looked at me as if examining a bug. “Don’t forget, when Germany was conquered, it was split up between the powers, and as we both know, Russia was one of those powers.
